Welcome to MyLibraryCardWoreOut!

I know that a lot of my readers are world-wide. A lot of my visitors are from the United States but I get some lovely visits from France, Australia, Israel and many others too. So where ever you are from, welcome to here and search and see if you can find what you are looking for. Just like a library, I try to keep my shelves up to date, but sometimes I don’t succeed. But I keep trying and usually once a week or at least every two weeks there is a book review but sometimes I do fun book related things. Also with the help of M.O.M (my own mother) we keep this blog running. Scroll down to read my latest posts. Enjoy!

A Bedtime Story Like No Other – FunDay Friday

Not the way to read to your little ones.

…”the kids a bit of a jerk”…

But then again – we aren’t little.

What a way to go to sleep.

Enjoy!

Chopsticks by Jessica Anthony and Rodrigo Corral – Print Version

This was extremely interesting. Not what I expected at all, and talk about sad. But what beautiful pictures. This is one of the first interactive graphic novels but they also do it in book form (which is what I read.) There is more I believe to the iPad, iPod, and iPhone version. I will be purchasing that because I am curious to see how the two compare but this book was amazing. Such beautiful colors and they presented the book in such an amazing way, just so interesting. The cover of this book was also so cute.

So simple yet so elegant. Also notice with the color how it is not a true color. It is off-color. That was the effect throughout the entire book and it was really a nice touch to the graphic novel.

It was a little confusing because through the entire novel they kept referring to each other as G and F and it got a little confusing during some parts as to who was who but it was quite easy to pick again.

This is a definite checker-outer (if that is a word) and a HOT OFF THE PRESS.

But this book is definitely for older readers as there is some bad language and some sexual topics. But that was like 5 pages in a 200 page book so really minimal.

Also I read this book, wait for it, in 25 minutes flat. That is my all time record. Admittedly,  it was all pictures.

So go and purchase it here for your “i” stuff or go to your local book store/local library or shop around online.

Hope that you enjoy.

And once again, thank you to Omar, my local YA librarian for having it ready to go.

Thanks.

Interactive Graphic Novel?!?!?!?!?!

The world is changing extremely fast. So is reading material. Books are changing into e-books, and graphic novels are changing into….interactive graphic novels?

Chopsticks is an interactive graphic novel compatible with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod touch (3rd generation), iPod touch (4th generation) and iPad.Requires iOS 4.0 or later.

It is rated 12+ for some inappropriate themes.

Click here to see this unique interactive novel and to purchase it.

I have not read it yet but want you to know about it as soon as everyone else knew.

Enjoy.

Poll Time

Just a little something to find out what my readers enjoy.

Hope you take the time to do the poll for me. :)

Thanks.

Poltergeist – 1982

Starring

Craig T. Nelson – Steve Freeling
JoBeth Williams – Diane Freeling
Beatrice Straight – Dr. Lesh
Dominique Dunne  - Dana Freeling
Oliver Robins – Robbie Freeling
Heather O’Rourke  - Carol Anne Freeling

Summary

“What a combo! Tobe Hooper, the director of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, teamed up with family-oriented producer Steven Spielberg to make Poltergeist. The film is about a haunted suburban tract home in a development very much like the Arizona one in which Spielberg was raised. (Because it came out the same summer as Spielberg’s E.T., it was tempting to see both movies as representing Spielberg’s ambivalent feelings about childhood in suburbia. One was a fantasy, the other a nightmare.) Spielberg also cowrote the screenplay, which taps into primal, childlike fears of monsters under the bed, monsters in the closet, sinister clown faces, and all manner of things that go bump in the night. At first, some of the odd happenings in the house are kind of funny and amusing, but they grow gradually creepier until the film climaxes in a terrifying special-effects extravaganza when 5-year-old Carole Anne (Heather O’Rourke) is kidnapped by the spooks and held hostage in another dimension. Though not nearly as frightening as Hooper’s magnum opus, or the original A Nightmare on Elm Street, which came along two years later, Poltergeist is one of the smartest and most entertaining horror pictures of its time. –Jim Emerson”

Review

This was a very….interesting movie. It was rated PG but this movie is about 30 years old and I would say it definitely was not PG. It was more like PG-13. The movie was not scary when you compare it to todays standards, but it did have its moments which were definitely not  PG moments. There was a scene where The Beast made one of the ghost hunters hallucinate that something really gruesome was happening to his face and it was creepy. It would not be considered that to todays standards but the rest of the movie was so harmless that it was not expected and made you jump.

Then there was the clown. Don’t get me started on the clown. I hated clowns to start with but this just did it.The clown was there and then it wasn’t. I HATE clowns. Except Bello and Grandma.

But I hate these clowns.

Never have and never will.

This is a definite movie to watch as it is a classic (along with Nightmare on Elm Street (not seen that yet )) but I would definitely wait until you are at least 13 years of age to see this one. Just for a few reasons.

I did enjoy this movie and I may just have to check out Poltergeist II and Poltergesit III.

Hope that you enjoy this one.

Can You Judge A Book By It’s Cover?

So, I have decided that I need to start talking about Book Cover Art and sharing some lovely book covers, or talking about the covers of books which I read and enjoyed. I have done a post about book covers before – Here -  with this jaw droppingly gorgeous cover for my JUST ABOUT ALL TIME FAVORITE BOOK. Do I need to give you a hint?

A lot of thought and planning goes into the cover of books, and somewhere an artist does what they do and create something magical. Have you noticed how the covers often give you clue about the story? Capture a bit of the flavor of the book? Or, don’t you stop and look? Maybe you will look at your books a little differently now. I hope that you enjoy these posts and look forward to more in the future.

Here is the cover of Graveling, a recently read and reviewed book. I just wanted to say a few thing about the cover of this book by Kristin Cashore. I thought that the cover was quite interesting. It is so simple, yet it is intriguing.

The cover depicts a dagger in the center with the reflection of a girls face (well, we have to assume that it is the main character Katsa). But then in the background it is a creme, parchment paper look with a blue layer on top. Then you have some red flowers at the bottom of the cover and some flowers at the top of the cover too. Atmospheric…..

I know that this cover may not seem interesting to some, but when you hold this book, it seems to reflect back at you and you have a different view of it. The cover looks interesting, and the dagger seems almost 3D. When my librarian Omar gave me this book to me to read I was instantly intrigued because of the cover.

So, yes, I do judge books by their cover, but only in a positive way.

Happy Valentines Day!!!!!!!

Graceling by Kristin Cashore

Summary

“Katsa has been able to kill a man with her bare hands since she was eight–she’s a Graceling, one of the rare people in her land born with an extreme skill. As niece of the king, she should be able to live a life of privilege, but Graced as she is with killing, she is forced to work as the king’s thug.

When she first meets Prince Po, Graced with combat skills, Katsa has no hint of how her life is about to change. She never expects to become Po’s friend. She never expects to learn a new truth about her own Grace–or about a terrible secret that lies hidden far away . . . a secret that could destroy all seven kingdoms with words alone.

With elegant, evocative prose and a cast of unforgettable characters, debut author Kristin Cashore creates a mesmerizing world, a death-defying adventure, and a heart-racing romance that will consume you, hold you captive, and leave you wanting more.”

Review

Before I even start about this book I would like to thank Omar my YA librarian for finding and giving me this book. Thank you so much because without you I don’t think I would have ever found this amazing book! :)

This was absolutely amazing. This is going to be on my top 5 favorite books of this year (unless I come across something more amazing which I highly doubt). The story had everything possible. It had romance, action, it was set in historical times, it was exciting, it was captivating, and it was overall amazing.

The story was about this girl named Katsa. She is Graced with killing but she did not want to have to use her grace. She does not like killing. The book follows her journey from when she meet Po, says no to her Uncle, and then follows her journey of finding a Princess and helping save people who need to be saved, and hurting those who need to be hurt.

I thought that the description in this books were very good. The author, Kristin Cashore, really painted a mental image of the scenery and what these places looked like. I enjoyed reading this book at night because I was kind of in that la-la land and I would go to bed with pretty scenery in my head (yes, I know, I am strange.) I just loved this book’s imagery. It was one of the highlights of the book.

There were not too many characters so you did not get confused as to what was going on. You always knew who was present and you always knew where they were which was helpful as there was a lot of traveling.

There are two more books like this called Fire and Butterblue. Fire happens 30 years before Graceling (even though Graceling was the first book published) and Butterblue takes place 8 years after Graceling.

I am going to be checking out these other two books and I hope that they will be as good as the first one.

If you would like to visit Kristin Cashore’s blog, please click here.

Her blog is great and have a look around.

This book was rated in my library PG-13 because there is some violence in it and there is some blood mentioned but I believe anyone 12/13 and older can read this book.

So happy reading.

FunDay Friday

Found this video on another website, but WordPress would not let me upload it :(

This video is similar to the one on the other website but not as good.

So if you want to see the other cute video, click here.

Another Fan Made Trailer by ME!!!!!

Well I decided to choose another one of my favorite books.

So this time I chose Digital Fortress by Dan Brown.

I personally do not think this one was as good as the first book trailer I did but I found it hard to find some good pictures for a cryptography/intelligence novel.

But I still hope that you enjoy.

A Chinese New Year at My House!!!

Well we don’t go full-out but we do eat some yummy food and spend time together and bring good luck for the year. So this year we decided to make some really good dumplings and a great beef main course.

What went into the dumplings - chicken, cabbage, cilantro, lemongrass, chives, finer, garlic, and egg

Then we put the mixture into some wonton wrappers.

Wonton Wrappers

The we had some dumplings. :)

Our completed dumplings - ready to be cooked

Our main meal was Sichuan Beef with Citrus Peel which the family unanimously give a 5 out of 5.

Beef strips were marinading

There was also tangerines, and tangerine peels in it.

Peeled and prepared tangerines

And you may be asking yourself, what was my cat doing during all of this (no your probably weren’t, but I just had to share a photo of my cat since I haven’t in a while). Well here he is.

My little Merlin sleeping through all the action :)

Of course he slept through the entire thing…being a cat and all.

So now I am going to share the recipes with you.

Lemongrass Chicken Dumplings

Knead 1 pound ground chicken with 1 cup finely shredded napa cabbage, 1/4 cup chopped cilantro, 2 tablespoons finely grated lemongrass, 2 tablespoons snipped chives, 1 tablespoon minced fresh ginger, 1 minced garlic clove, 1 beaten egg and 1 teaspoon kosher salt.

Put 1 teaspoon of the mixture in the center of 1 wonton wrapper (directions on closing wrapper on package usually). If it does not say how to close it, you put water around all the edges, more is better, Then you pinch it closed in any way you can to seal the edges.

In a nonstick skillet, heat 2 tablespoons of the vegetable oil. Arrange half of the dumplings in the skillet, pleated edge up. Cook over high heat until the bottoms are lightly browned, 2 minutes. Add 1/2 cup of water, cover and cook until the filling is cooked through, 5 minutes (watch this step because the bottoms blacken easily)(watch dumplings all the time). Uncover and cook until the bottoms are well browned, 1 minute; transfer to a place. Cook the remaining dumplings and serve.

You can make these dumplings ahead and freeze then.

Freeze the uncooked dumplings on a floured baking sheet. Store in a place bag for up to one month. Cook from frozen.

Sichuan Beef with Citrus Peel

Marinade

1 1/2 tablespoons dark soy sauce
1 tablespoon cornstarch

********************

12 ounces flank steak, thinly sliced diagonally

Sauce

3 tablespoons frozen orange juice concentrate, thawed
1 tablespoon light soy sauce
1 tablespoon sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons cornstarch
1 teaspoon chile garlic sauce

********************

2 tablespoons cooking oil
4 small dried red chiles
4 green onions, cut diagonally into 2-inc lengths
orange segments

Soak the tangerine peel in warm water to cover until softened, about 15 minutes. Reserve the tangerine peel soaking liquid. Scrape and discard the white pith from the back of the peel. Cut the peel into thin strips.

In a bowl, combine the marinade ingredients and 2 tablespoons of the reserved tangerine peel soaking liquid. Add the beep and stir to coat. Let stand for 30 minutes. Combine the sauce ingredients in a bowl.

Place a wok or wide frying pan over high heat until hot. Add 1 tablespoon of the oil, swirling to coat the sides. Add the chiles and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 10 seconds. Add the beef and stir-fry until barely pink, about 2 minutes. Remove the beef and chiles from the wok.

Add the remaining oil to the wok, swirling to coat the sides. Add the tangerine peel and stir-fry for 1 minute. Add the green onions and stir-fry for 1 minute. Add the sauce and cook, stirring, until the sauce boils and thickens. Return the beef and chiles to the wok; mix well. Place on serving patter and garnish with the orange segments.

- From Martin Yan’s Invitation to Chinese Cooking Cookbook

We finished off the evening with some Coconut Ice Cream and boohoo, no Fortune Cookies (thanks Whole Foods for not selling them) :(

But the food was great and we kicked off the Year of the Dragon with great style.

How did you bring in the Chinese New Year????????
